Japanese on Offer at GCL

Gaelcholaiste Luimnigh now offering Japanese
Gaelcholaiste Luimnigh is delighted to announce that it is offering Japanese to it's Transition Year pupils from September 2010.

Japanese was originally chosen as one of the target languages of the initiative, in recognition of the growing importance of non-European languages to Irish students. Japanese was chosen as trade links were important with Japan so that there was a recognition of its value as a language for business. Japan is still the second largest economy in the world, it is still recognised as the country producing most innovation, and Japan is still a world leader in the automobile industy, in energy conservation, and in fashion culture, to name but a few.

Japanese is currently on offer in 32 schools across the country.

College Principal, Mr Donncha O Treasaigh is delighted with the news and is very keen to promote the fact that the school promotes multiple languages in Gaelcholaiste Luimnigh.  "It is well documented that language acquisition is easier in all-Irish schools when the medium of instruction is in another language" according to Mr. O Treasaigh

"We supported two of our Transition Year pupils from last year to attend a school in Tokyo for four weeks last Spring, so we already have great interest in this language in the College".
